Forget the Renault 5? Meet the Aion UT

Satisfy the Aion UT, a new electric hatchback from China that could shake up the ₤ 30,000 EV market.

Larger than a Renault 5 but smaller than a VW ID.3, the Aion UT integrates a 60kWh LFP battery with a declared 268-mile WLTP variety, 201hp and a 0-62mph time of simply 7.3 seconds.

However the numbers aren't the most intriguing feature of it. The UT has a remarkably big 440-litre boot, loads of rear-seat area and an extremely generous basic specification. And then there's Aion's rather outstanding "Excellent 8" ownership bundle, including an eight-year/100,000- mile guarantee, 8 years of servicing and roadside help, plus 8 years of MOT cover.

So can this newbie take on the Renault 5, Renault 4, MG4, BYD Atto 2, Kia EV2 and Cupra Raval? And who exactly is Aion?

Join Vicky as she takes a first look at the Aion UT and discover why this could be among the most intriguing brand-new affordable EVs of 2026.

    Looks like a decent sized hatchback, really well spec’d, the outside a little bland, however the interior looks great, better than a lot of it’s competition in a lot of ways.

      having had one (which as male is not meant to happen and they said I’d be in hospital if I got another within 15 years)… you definitely don’/t want a UTI

    You may not have heard of GAC, but once in a while, your Honda Jazz in the UK is made by them.

    £30k?? The new geely ex2 starts at £20k, and the renault 4, ID cross, epiq, e2008 etc etc are cheaper cars from established manufacturers. If Chinese companies want market share they need to undercut on pricing.

    1. @MrAndreCoutinho Avatar
      @MrAndreCoutinho

      it’s pricier, but this offers way better value than the geely ex2.

      Exactly, the new EVs from Europe and Korea will always beat them if they price their cars to compete with them, they need to be undercutting them by at least 20%. Fact is a brand pre registered Kia EV2 is about 22k EUR now in the EU. Why would I buy a Chinese car when I could have a very polished product from a proven legacy brand with a reputation for reliability and huge service network?

    3. @sargfowler9603 Avatar
      @sargfowler9603

      Probably won’t be that price after a few months and people shouldn’t be buying it with cash, so PCP matters more.
      But I do agree, some of these Chinese cars are really expensive!

      @stefanomcc77

      @alexanderstefanov6474 dunno where you are, but ev2 in italy start from 30k€ and with a 42kwh battery for base model, the second trim (out of 4) with 61kwh battery is 38k, honestly way too much for that ugly cube.

    5. @santostv. Avatar
      @santostv.

      @alexanderstefanov6474 ev 2 is 28k€ in Portugal for base model, besides byd,mg,leapmotor via Stellantis most Chinese brands will disappear from the European market.

      it’s so good, isn’t it! We suspect that it’ll be a very different buyer looking at a Renault 5 or Aion UT, but at the price, the comparison has to be made!

    This car is available for a few months now in Greece in two trims. Premium and luxury. The luxury one, apart from the panoramic roof and a few other things, it also includes ventilated driver’s seat, which I don’t think any other car in this category offers. They go for 25000 and 27000 euros respectively.

    It’s been out in Australia for months, so yes, I did know what it is as 4 friends have one. They’re very cheap here, but the quality is much better than all the other Chinese manufacturers inc BYD, it has lots of room inside. It’s the Nissan Micra of old (older people who don;t care how a car drives or looks, it just needs to get from A to B reliably. Looks very similar to the Geely EX2 (frumpy), yet it was designed in Italy, something I should have thought Italy would not be proud of.

      I agree. I love the discontinued Ora 3 the most. I sat in one and it felt premium, funky and roomy. But it had a tiny boot and no rear wiper, which did not impress, it did not sell and it has been withdrawn.

      The new Ora 5 is nowhere as nice, has an odd snowplough-looking front grill and nothing to excite with exterior and interior colours… whereas the Ora 3 had 2 tone interiors and beautiful exterior colours.

      There is a new Ora 5 hatch coming out soon. I hope it is like the Ora 3 but with rear wiper, space for spare wheel and bigger boot… 🙏

    The Great 8 sounds good with the after care and no hassle, Would be nice if other companies go this way .
    No maintenance , mot service worries for 8 years this would make you more willing to keep the car the full 8 years rather than changing say Every 3-5 years .

    A very interesting new car and I think it will appeal to a lot of drivers. Interior space in the back looks enormous and the boot is plenty big enough for this class of car. The “Great 8” is an excellent idea and will probably appeal to those who want to just buy and have a reliable, fuss free, car for a long period.
