Range Rover Sport EV First Drive: Now we know why JLR took so long

The all-electric Range Rover Sport is coming, however JLR has taken its time. After driving an early model at Goodwood, we believe we understand why.
With an 800V architecture, double electrical motors, irreversible four-wheel drive and a 118.5 kWh functional battery, the Range Rover Sport EV promises to provide the refinement, effortless performance and real off-road capability purchasers expect. However can it still feel like a proper Range Rover once the engine has gone?
We take the model around Goodwood's handling circuit and off-road course, consisting of the Dragon Step, and learn what JLR has actually changed, why it developed its own motors and battery in-house, and how the electrical Sport could compare with the BMW iX5, Polestar 3 and Porsche Cayenne Electric.
Final variety, charging and pricing are still to be validated, but we expect around 350 miles of variety, charging at approximately 350kW and a cost from approximately ₤ 100,000.

      Rangie buyers are similar to Mini buyers – they’re buying for the brand, rather than the car’s specs. For this reason their customer base is extremely loyal and aren’t buying cars like most people do. So, your point about better rivals is certainly valid, but actual buyers of this car (not people in this comment section) don’t care, they simply want a Range Rover for the brand appeal.

      @stephenwensleyno I meant every single European rival is preferable.

      Nio isn’t that good a value proposition and they have barely any swap stations in eu, L&C failed miserably and Xpeng has yet to demonstrate any long term quality/ service capability

    People saying Xpeng etc, different buyer in truth. The folks that want this to rock up at their country club, spa, golf club etc will want to step out of a Range. So whilst JLR have taken an age, they do have loyal base to buy this. Fingers crossed for UK jobs they can make EV’s a success…

      Right. I love my range rover. I havent had any issues with. Maintenance is constantly up to date and I havent had to put in the shop. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Lol. Naw, but I have a great experience.

    Long term Range Rover owner here and we gave up waiting for JLR to get their EV strategy together , lost customer. We are now with BMW and will be buying the new i3 when it’s released.

    Whilst I wish them all the best, I sincerely hope that when they release the Range Rover that their technology is bang up to date. As BMW / Mercedes are on their MK2 / MK3 models and technology is way way ahead of the old iPace. They will need 500+ miles to even be relevant.

      Buses are far more effective and artic trucks are highly efficient bicyclist squishers. As far as I know neither has automous human and animal detection that brakes and steers them to protect people. The RR has that and much much more.

    So now Land Rover will ask for this new full electric 200 quid because it’s the “most dynamic”. But that is nothing for us here in Brazil: it’s already 260 thousand quid (£) anyway for the diesel version 🙄😒like the Cayenne turbo electric is already.

      My thoughts exactly. In a time where other manufacturers are continuing to innovate and find ways to push the industry forward, Land Rover seems keen to sit on their arses, to put it bluntly. Quite annoying really, because they have an objectively good looking product, but the innovation and the technology just isn’t quite there. Granted specs for the car are yet to be released, but again, when you hear the quote “not interested in spec battles”, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, does it. 🤣

      I was about to write the same 😆 late at the party, trying to keep up with the existing cars that are already available, well advanced in technology… and cheaper…
      Apparently they can still count on brand fans to fight against the mockers 😆 do they call themselves “The Defenders” ?
