This BMW has a BIG PROBLEM

Check out brand-new and secondhand cars and trucks with Carwow:

It's time for three of the most desired electrical SUVs to go head-to-head to see which should have a spot on your driveway.

In one corner, we have the worldwide best-seller – and recently upgraded – Tesla Design Y. It is being challenged by a fresh, high-tech competitor from Ingolstadt, the Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron, and the latest all-electric offering from Munich, the BMW iX3.

These three represent the cutting edge of premium household transport, however they each take a very different method to design, performance, and day-to-day functionality.

The Tesla Design Y AWD Long Variety remains the benchmark that everybody else is attempting to beat. Known for its class-leading effectiveness and exceptional charging facilities, the Model Y provides a dual-motor setup that supplies sure-footed all-wheel-drive traction and a 0-60mph time that puts many sports cars to pity.

Inside, it's as minimalist as every cars and truck in Tesla's line-up, dominated by a single enormous touchscreen that manages practically every function of the car. While some may find the absence of physical buttons polarising, there is no rejecting the sheer amount of interior space and the creative storage services, including a huge "frunk" and a spacious rear boot.

Transferring to the Audi Q6 Sportback RWD Performance, we see a concentrate on streamlined aesthetic appeals and long-distance touring. By going with the rear-wheel-drive "Performance" variant, Audi has prioritised range, making use of a large battery and a more aerodynamic Sportback shape to extract optimum miles from every charge.

Developed on the new PPE platform shared with Porsche, the Q6 includes an ultra-fast 800V charging architecture, permitting you to add numerous miles in the time it takes to get a coffee. The interior functions Audi's new "Digital Stage" OLED screen design, although we're not a fan of the huge bezels around the screen! Fortunately, however, there are premium products throughout.

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive represents the most recent development of BMW's electrical SUV lineup, now boasting a dual-motor setup for substantially more punch than its predecessor. BMW has focused heavily on the driving experience, guaranteeing that even as a heavy SUV, it retains that signature "Ultimate Driving Device" DNA with sharp steering and made up handling.

It likewise features an enormous battery capacity that presses its variety toward the 500-mile mark in ideal conditions, and like the Audi, it makes use of an 800V system for lightning-fast top-ups. The cabin features the brand new scenic iVision screen, which, while impressive, possibly uses a great deal of information that isn't that helpful on a journey to the shops!

This group test isn't just about the numbers on a spec sheet; it has to do with how these cars and trucks handle the real world. Mat will be putting all three through their paces, testing whatever from their real-world effectiveness and interior quality to their infotainment systems and rear-seat functionality. By the end of this deep dive, we'll see if the Tesla can keep its crown or if the German giants have lastly caught up to – and overtaken – the most popular electric SUV of current years!

      They are all within 2 car lengths, say within 8 metres. 8 metres is breaking 0.2 seconds later than the other. I guess it takes several shots to get them being close together. If someone breaks 0.5 seconds late, its 22 metres down the road and that would look weird in the video 😉

      The Model Y performance runs the 1/4 mile in 11.5 seconds and is only $2K more than that BMW (vs this one being $7K less) – they didn’t bring the fastest tesla.

    2. @jochem1986 Avatar
      @jochem1986

      @raydoherty5419 The Model Y performance does worse in other areas, like range and efficiency. The Long Range is the one people actually want. It’s so much nicer to get an extra 20 or 30 miles from a battery than a party trick at the lights.

    3. @raydoherty5419 Avatar
      @raydoherty5419

      @jochem1986the Y performance would still be the most efficient out of these 3 though. I just think it matches up better with the BMW (the BMW does have massive range for sure )

    4. @jochem1986 Avatar
      @jochem1986

      @raydoherty5419 This is about the best offerings for daily use, and even though the Performance is also very efficient, it’s not the best that Tesla offers.

    Looking at a cars efficiency that has been raced within an inch of its life is not an accurate depiction of how far it can go. Bjorn Nyland (Tesla Bjorn)did a long range test in the BMW and got over 830+km so over 500miles. He was driving on mainly motorways ranging from 60 mph to 80mph and the temps were 2c in the morning to 19c later in the day. So it actually did more than its claimed range. Plus the charging is way faster than the Tesla and has a much better charging curve. Plus Bjorn Nyland, love him or hate him is the main man with I would say RSymons and Kyle Connor regarding range tests.

    1. @sbalko74 Avatar
      @sbalko74

      Yes exactly. Bjorn’s test of the new iX3 ought to silence anyone who still talks about range anxiety in 2026.

    2. @RajeevHiralal Avatar
      @RajeevHiralal

      Agree, Bjorn has a number of videos released last couple of days and it really provides good/indept insights. Long story short; the iX3 has the best range results in basically any scenario. Close to Tesla efficiency but with a larger battery = better range (the gap is far bigger than Carwow states and charges significantly faster). The added range justifies the price.

      Tesla has been king during the last 10 years, but I would finally argue the BMW is the new king of EV’s – with all things considered. Think about it: Tesla’s software is still best in class, but interior and exterior of the BMW is miles better than Tesla, especially the M sports models. Tesla’s didn’t really improve the battery al that much compared to the last gen models, should have added a heads-up display / second screen and never removed the stalk. It’s just lacking in many areas).

    3. @johngpreston1784 Avatar
      @johngpreston1784

      Agreed. This video implies the ranges are so similar the difference isn’t worth bothering about. I don’t think that is fair.

    4. @trancenut81 Avatar
      @trancenut81

      Huh and where are BMW superchargers? Where is FSD? Pretty sure when you add all of the stupid options the germans are really fond of, this would cost a whole lot more than the Tesla. Even before that the Model Y L has this covered and its even cheaper than the Model Y Long Range

    5. @edipires15 Avatar
      @edipires15

      @trancenut81first of all, Tesla Superchargers are irrelevant for any car with an 800V charging architecture, and there are now plenty of fast chargers throughout continental Europe.
      Secondly FSD in Europe at the moment is only available in the Netherlands, and while it’s impressive driving in urban areas, on faster roads it isn’t better than the driving assistants from the Germans manufacturers.
      The only things Tesla has an advantage are in efficiency (where BMW is not far behind) and price (its only true advantage against the German companies, but the Chinese companies are aggressively challenging Tesla on that front too)
