    Gosh, there will be a new better battery that will replace Lithium Ion Batteries, but they have to hurry because a better, solid state battery is in development which will replace it. Dream on.

    Battery lift isn’t really a big issue. Cost, energy density and charging rates are the biggest areas requiring improvement. With a new battery ‘destroying the competition’ every week, I think I’ll wait to see what actually makes it to market in volume before jumping for joy.

    “Fewer cells for the same capacity means shorter charging times!” Nope. 70kWh takes effectively the same amount of time to charge regardless of how many cells it is divided in. What can shorten charging times is higher charging power rating to put those kWh back in faster. Today’s best LFP batteries can already charge at about 350kW max and since there are so few chargers able to go this fast, solid-state won’t help much when the connectors are officially only rated for 500A/1000V. At best, they may be able to hold that 500kW a bit longer than LFP can do 350kW and shorten total charging time by a minute or two.

    BTW, if you want a 1000V system to hit that hypothetical 500kW, you will need ~250 cells in series no matter how big or small they are since each cell only does about 4V.

    Batteries that allow 5 minutes charging time, 500+ mile range, long life span, and low cost will probably arrive in the next 5-10 years.
    After this happens, the marginal returns of new improvements will continue to decrease.
    CATL or someone will have a competitive advantage for a couple years after this point, then everyone will catch up. In 10-15 years it will be another low margin commodity product that can be made nearly anywhere.

    There is another disadvantage that only applies for American and European customers: punitive tariffs on Chinese electric products 😅
