Renault Brings Back the Espace — With a Twist!

MPVs are back– and Renault thinks they're cool once again. Fulfill the Renault E-Space Concept: a vibrant, blocky electrical individuals carrier that looks back to the initial 1984 Espace while pointing towards a possible production EV.

Sign up with Ginny for a more detailed take a look at among the stars of the Paris Motor Program, from its unique 'TGV train' silhouette and big glasshouse to an interior that turns household travel into top-notch travel.

Inside, the E-Space Principle has 6 individual turning seats. The middle row can face the rear guests for a conference-style layout, or fold flat to develop a table. There are also rear-seat screens, folding tables and a significant brand-new full-width OpenR Panorama show in advance.

At 4.7 metres long, it has to do with the very same size as the initial Espace– however with a thoroughly contemporary electric twist. Renault hasn't verified battery, charging or range details yet, so this is quite a design-led principle for now. Could this be the EV that makes MPVs appropriately preferable again?

Let us understand: would you select a cool electrical MPV over an SUV?

    I don’t really care much for concept car interiors that obviously have zero chance of ever being produced, I suppose they are fun exercises for designers, though. I really like the exterior. I hope it goes into production. Should be more aerodynamic than most EV vans. As for the “TGV train” bit, if you compare it to older TGV trains, you will really see what the designers are talking about.

      Yep, the first gen TGV trains entered service in the 80’s and so did the first gen Espace. Everyone did back then compare the Espace with the TGV.

      Every new part is potentially a new concept. Everything is bespoke because nothing exists. Take a car from concept to prototype, and you start to see what will actually potentially be a production vehicle.

    Cool car indeed! The original Espace was so awesome! But… no need to wait for a concept, look forward for your video on the Li Auto Mega!

    Very interesting concept. We’ll have to see what actually makes it to production. I do have to say, that is a great looking front end design (maybe without all the lights)! Hats off to the designers for creating that instead of all the useless plastic bits, vents, and shapes that make up so many modern cars.

    YES! Renault go build the E-SPACE and soon! Underpinning? Use the 800V system of the Trafic, give it a nice comfortable suspension that firms up properly for corners. And oh ja, for the top model 4-wheel steering, so in the city it feels more like a Twingo!

    This is what Renault should be doing and this is what an Espace should be like. Always thought MPVs were cooler and smarter than the silly SUVs – made to be a solution to a problem, not just mere trend-tractors, like SUVs. Loving everything about it! The high-speed train look is so much more appealing and sophisticated than some aggressive wanna-be off-roader. I clearly remember the first time I saw an Espace, close to Calais on the family holiday trip to Cornwall 40 years ago. I instantly knew it was the coolest car ever and made the family Volvo 245 my parents had (like most Swedes did back then) feel like last millennium. And, Renault – please don’t make Ginny disappointed – bring us a Formula-E-Space, please!

      I have to admit to never liking MPVs previously however I love the design of this one. Like most concept cars that interior will never make it to production, the cost would be astronomical. But it’s a great exterior design and I strongly suspect Renault will be bringing it to market soonish

    For me, 90kWh, 800V, removable seats and you can have my money now.

    1. @shonza00 Avatar
      @shonza00

      Honestly, I don’t even care about the battery anymore. Just do the removable seats. My old Espace’s time is running out and I don’t want to switch to fixed/folding seats.

    If this is built I can see this being a hit over SUV’s for families it’s fabulous no car producer has anything like it if I was family orientated I would buy in a heartbeat fair play to Renault for this
    I would say my pick of the show

    Back doors are crazy. Sliding doors, please.

    1. @largestprime Avatar
      @largestprime

      exactly. especially if the car is going to be so wide. sliding doors might be the only way to get in if you’re in a tight parking place.

    2. @johanwejedaldesign Avatar
      @johanwejedaldesign

      It’s a concept car and they always have this kind of door opening to be able to show of the interior as much as possible. I bet the real one will get very normal doors.

    Great review. Had the original Espace when my kids were small. It was perfect.

    I really hope they bring back removable/modular seats. Me and my father in law both have the 4th gen Espace and this is a totally dealbreaking feature that is keeping us from upgrading. You can create any layout you want and if you need to carry a lot of stuff, you can just throw everything out. You can’t get anymore practical on a footprint of a small SUV. You can fit a 75 inch TV in a box and lay it flat on the floor and it fits perfectly.

    It’s actually nice that they let you climb around the interior even though it’s a concept car, that’s rather unusual! Now, this is clearly quite far from production in many aspects, but add some headlight projectors, proper wing mirrors and more humble wheels and I wouldn’t be surprised if the exterior was not too far from production style wise, as Renault has form in bringing cars almost unchanged from concept to production recently. I suspect the success of the PV5 inspired them to go this route.

    I think the original Espace was designed by Matra and it was intended to replace the Talbot-Matra Rancho. However, PSA got cold feet so Matra took the design to Renault and then built the first three generations on Renault’s behalf.

    1. @remy2824 Avatar
      @remy2824

      Matra bore all the risk until it went bankrupt.
      Renault takes all the credits 😱

    The Espace has always been clever with the seat layout. You also used to be able to remove all the rear seats. But let’s see what they ACTUALLY make.

    I cannot explain, even to myself, how much I want this car. I don’t even have kids. The pure luxury of that interior reminds me of a 1970’s concept of what we will be driving in the future but actually we can make it today. Gorgeous. Mine will be brown.

    I drove an Espace hire car in France when they first came out (a long time ago) and loved it, but I couldn’t afford to buy one. They remained out of my price range, but I eventually bought a Toyota Spacecruiser, which I loved as did my three kids.
