Jaguar Type 01 First Look: The Biggest Gamble in Jaguar’s History

The Jaguar Type 01 is finally here– and, incredibly, Jaguar really constructed the car it guaranteed us.
After the extraordinary Type 00 principle caused a sensation in 2024, there were lots of concerns about how much of that outrageous style would make it through the journey into production. The response? Quite a lot.

The Type 01 is a five-metre-plus electric grand tourer with more than 1,000 hp, 3 motors, a big 118kWh battery and a declared range of approximately 450 miles. It can charge at approximately 350kW, with Jaguar claiming an additional 200 miles of range in just 13 minutes.

But the numbers aren't really the point. Jaguar has designed the Type 01 from the ground up around its styling, creating an unique electrical platform and sticking extremely closely to the Type 00 concept. There are 23-inch wheels, a nearly impossibly long bonnet, no back window and a dramatic four-seat interior built around a main spinal column.

Inside, you'll discover a 24-inch OLED display screen, a devoted seven-inch control screen, a full-width soundbar, seats with Jaguar's Sensory Audio system and, yes, even a scent diffuser.
We have actually likewise had a passenger ride in a development prototype, while Vicky has actually driven one, offering us an early impression of what this substantial electrical GT is like on the roadway.
Orders for the Jaguar Type 01 open on 6 October, with very first deliveries expected from mid-2027.
So has Jaguar truly managed its most significant gamble yet? And can this remarkable automobile encourage purchasers that the brand-new Jaguar deserves the wait?

    Rear windows are for visibility, yes, but also for letting in what precious little light is left with today’s thickkk C and D pillars

      It has a glass roof though. I don´t think light is a problem. but it look really cramped, like it really wanted to be a coupé, but they chickened out.

      It’s cosy. It’s private. I oddly like that style, but it could be the hermit in me hiding from society 😂

      @motoriety

      That’s fair. Where I’m from though we keep our glass roofs closed due to the heat. But I guess the electronic blinds aren’t as dark as physical shades.

    For such a MASSIVE car, there’s not much room inside – cramped back seats and not much boot space. Does it have a massive frunk under that massive bonnet?

      It’s a Jaguar. That’s part of the point.

      @EdwardC2 But not being able to even fit golf clubs in the boot is quite an issue for those who can afford this kind of car, I mean I could take up tennis but I don’t have the legs for those shorts 😂

    Jaguar managing to bring Escalade levels of frontal blindspot to a saloon car.

    This thing is just way too big, that’s like a crossover height and just comically extended in all over directions to make it look less blobby

      @mizake01jesus christ what in the schizo rant was that. There’s plenty of data on front overs and rear overs, the biggest car killers of kids are their own parents in massive SUVs not being able to see them. How does there being lots of them make it any better?

      Welcome to every Jaguar XJ since 1968, they’re all like this. my ~5.2m long V12 long wheelbase sedan has a high belt line, my head is against the sunroof, I can’t sit in the rear seat behind myself, the trunk is super shallow and not really useful, and the glovebox is too small to even fit the owner’s manual… this is a Jaguar tradition

      It was always the way in Jaguars, the XJ6, XJ12 and XJS I had were all big on the outside and cramped on the inside

    3. @tribalypredisposed Avatar
      @tribalypredisposed

      It seems to be inspired by the Fisker Karma of 2012, another huge car that had the battery pack down the middle of the interior, huge wheels on the corners, long hood, minimal trunk space, aggressively sloped roof, it was described as “cramped” by reviewers. IF they give you an enormous frunk under the hood that would make the car more functional, but I assume there is no frunk and a lot of battery and other things under the hood. Anyways, hard pass even at $45,000 as a Model Y seems like a much better choice, and this is insanely expensive.

      Every Jaguar is like this, at least every XJ since 1968. This is coming from someone who has owned at least one from each generation. My long wheelbase v12 sedan has basically no usable trunk space, my head is against the sunroof in the drivers seat, i don’t fit behind myself in the rear seat, there’s basically no rear headroom, and the glovebox doesn’t even fit the owner’s manual… and it’s 5.15 meters long

    For that purpose it works very well

      No, my dads got a ‘99 XJ and always had another car for running about in. They really aren’t practical. He’s 93 and can’t get in it anymore, we’re wondering what to do with what’s effectively a toy. He’s had it since 18 months old and only done 68,000 miles, it’s gorgeous but not very useful.
