They are separate to reduce rear end collision damage to the exhaust.

@I_THE_MEvery true. Rear ended a Nissan Joke a few years ago with my V70 and the Nissan’s exhaust punched a hole in my bumper which resulted in the Nissan ending up with repairs worth £4k
My Volvo just had cosmetic damage and a hole lol -
@I_THE_ME I’ve always thought they were designed this way for ease of manufacturing and fitment. No adjustments to the exhaust necessary and tight fitment to the bumper which they can change or alter to customer preferences easily without tweaking the exhaust.
I could be wrong though if Euro NCAP takes into account rear end collision safety though.
