Geely EX5: Why pay double for a Porsche?

The Geely EX5 is definitely low-cost, but is it much better than what the prominent German manufacturers need to use?

Mat's got his hands on the Geely EX5!

It's a luxurious-feeling, family-sized electric SUV that has class-leading German SUVs such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Audi Q4 e-tron in its sights!

The concern is, should you select this brand new Chinese SUV over its more recognized rivals? Let's take a more detailed look.

Beginning with the design, it has a relatively inoffensive look from the outside. The ₤ 800 paint on the design we're examining definitely helps it stand out, however otherwise it's relatively generic, with smooth curves across the bonnet. Around the side there's black cladding around the wheel arches, satin roofing system bars and chrome window surrounds. Around the back, the style is again relatively nondescript, although we can't help but see some Macan similarities!

On the within, the EX5 is very well kitted out. There are soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, and the ₤ 300 white trim alternative extra actually assists to elevate it. There's a big infotainment screen which is crisp, sharp, and simple to use, and the digital dial screen uses all the info you need. The guiding wheel is a little an odd shape, but it's still ok to utilize, and there are some physical buttons to help adjust the climate control. All-in, it's a well-made interior that feels elegant.

The Geely EX5 comes with a single motor and a 60.2 kWh battery, which benefits a range of 267 miles. It has a power output of 218hp, and this power is sent to the front wheels just.

The EX5 variety starts from just ₤ 31,000, with the cost rising to around ₤ 37,700 for the range-topping model we have here (at least, that's the expense on Carwow at the time of recording). So the question is, would you pick this over among the more-established, more-expensive rivals such as the Q4? Let us know in the comments!

    The scary part isn’t that the Geely is cheap. It’s how expensive everything else suddenly looks.

      Because they are selling them under cost until they kill local industry… seriously. If you buy Chinese cars and heavy equipment I question your intelligence. It’s time to move away from that. China is your enemy make no mistake.

      We made a massive mistake turning over so much of our industries. Time to fix that.

      and then realise the Geely is artificially made more expensive because the EU wants to protect its own (failing) car industry ><

      @zeroclockgamingit is made artificially LESS expensive by China to kill local industry. They are selling them 30 percent under cost.

    I have the Starray. The hybrid version. The steering wheel shape grows on you. Had it 4 months now and love it. As for the sunroof you don’t need to slide the sunshade slider when opening the sunroof it does it automatically and you can just ask the voice command to do it to save going through the menu screen.

    1. @andygm525 Avatar
      @andygm525

      Also done 4500 miles and I’ve only used around £200 of petrol in that time. And in that time I’ve been on a 4 day camping trip in north Wales and from Sheffield to Gatwick airport. Most of my daily commutes are done purely on electric mode. So if you aren’t ready for a full EV then hybrid could be a good option.

    2. @purwantiallan5089 Avatar
      @purwantiallan5089

      @andygm525the Starray believe it or not, driven better than the Geely EX5.

      @macchine.veloci.2

      @andygm525I have the Leapmotor C10 REEV and I’m having a very similar experience. Geely seems better refined and optioned, but is FWD rather than RWD, plus the Geely I believe uses a gearbox as well, so the engine is actually conected to the wheels sometimes, I wonder if this is a good or a bad thing in the long term.

    In Malaysia, it was rebadged as Proton e.Mas 7.
    There’s an EV and PHEV versions.
    For this similar EV version, is priced from RM98k – RM120K.
    Or from £18k – £22k.

      Geely owns 49.9% stake in Proton Holdings. And DRB Hicom which owns Proton before 2017, sold 51.1% stake of Lotus to Geely. And they also partly owned the massive Proton manufacturing plant in Malaysia to assemble Geely products for SE Asia market. Mainly for right hand drive cars.

    Interesting. Nice design for the most. I can even accept the Cayenne looks and some details being inspired by European cars.
    Even more interesting that whoever decided the wheelbase apparently never compared notes with whoever designed the body. Notice how the wheel arches aren’t even centered over the wheels.
