Kia EV9 FIRST DRIVE – Will Kia’s Flagship 6/7 seat EV win over Range Rover customers ?!

I flew to Scotland for the first UK drives of the all-electric Kia 9. Will Kia's new flagship 6/7 seat SUV be a match for the likes of Variety Rover? I did a studio shoot with the 9 earlier this year however it was great to finally get behind the wheel and show you simply what it resembles to drive.

Looks like a competent car but its the badge for me and I did love my sportage but at the first opportunity to get back into a Land Rover I jumped at the chance and instantly regretted it as it sat in the dealers for 3 months awaiting a part. That is a good point about the only electric vehicle with more than 5 seats so I suppose horses for courses. I do live in a stunning part of the UK and do enjoy it at any opportunity. Off on another 300 mile day trip up North in a weeks time. Can’t wait.

I think you need to be prepared for a new world order in terms of car manufacture. All the years ago, Toyota and Nissan took sales from the traditional manufacturers, in particular in the UK, Ford and Vauxhall. That was followed by Kia and Hyundai, chasing the Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Ford and Vauxhall markets. With the increasing dominance Evs, now Kia and Hyundai are dominating those markets but also filtering into BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Polestar, with essentially Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, Orca and Smart stepping in at the more “value for money” end of the market. Many, if not most of these cars have significant Chinese components anyway. JLR appear to be far behind in terms of providing competitive EV’s and if they don’t start delivering son, I really fear for their continued existence.

Hi ped love the number plate. The car if your in the market for that size of vehicle then yes itโ€™s a good car . I do think Kia / Hyundai are giving the Germans a run for there money when it comes to Evโ€™s. And yes Scotland has definitely got some of the best driving roads we were up around Glen co a few years ago and wow the scenery was amazing.

The KIA engineering skill has no bounds. .. KIA will sell every EV9 model it brings to N. America. .. KIA is deservedly on a roll. ..
What is the KIA EV model’s warranty? .. Their ICE models, if I recall, have a 10-year/100K-mile powertrain warranty. .. Cheers, Think Snow

Hi Pete, and welcome to Scotland.
Great review as usual, and beautiful location.
I’ll save my judgement on the cars looks until I see it in the metal on the road, which given its price may be some time !
Can’t help but thinking that if MG ever brought a similar sized car to the market, it would surely be much cheaper !!

Itโ€™s amazing how big kids are these days. When I went to school in the 90s, 3 kids fitted in the back of a Golf no problem and all our gear in the boot.

Great video as usual, and stunning scenery. Why do some people get so hung up on the badge? If I could afford to buy that sort of car, I would go for the Kia every time over a JLR product because of the latter’s appalling reliability record. If a manufacturer gives a 7 year warranty it shows they have faith in the quality of their product.

There you go, if I could afford it. When will you comment on how ridiculously expensive these are?
Are you not, so that the manufacturers don’t stop you testing?

    3. @trevorcrook2565 Avatar
      @trevorcrook2565

Depends what you are comparing it with. I could never afford one, but you see plenty of Range Rovers around, so some people can. Pete always makes very fair comments on the price of things he drives.

Peter, the Elephant in the room is not the vehicle itself, but U.K. insurance rates. The cheapest quote I was offered as a central London resident with secure underground parking was ยฃ2200 per annum fully comp, with over 20 years of no claims. My current 4 year old Range Rover comes in at ยฃ515 per annum for the same cover.

75k! To my mind that’s still a massive amount of money. However, compared to the EV9s rivals it’s a bit of a bargain.

Such beautiful scenery. It makes one want to pack the family in the EV9 and go gallivanting across the countryside. That warranty should help a great deal, too. Nothing to quibble over at all, apart from the controls. SO many other cars suffer from that, though. As I’ve even seen terrible control layouts in computer software programmes, these same engineers who try to design HVAC and other controls don’t seem to have a sense of the ergonomics of automotive controls. Still…you got along great, enjoyed a memorable drive, and expertly presented a very worthy contender. Aloha.

so i guess its closest competition right now would be the lotus Eletre for size/range/price/weight etc , Also, i dont think the climate positioning would bother me too much cause for me, once its set, its rarely touched from drive to drive. PS welcome to Scotland, hope you enjoyed
