The brand with the most American made car (as in coupe/sedan, not vehicle) is now producing more cars in China than in the US.
As to their US production, they recently started selling cars in the US using Chinese LFP battery cells (possibly entire packs), the most expensive part of the car.
While Chinese vehicle and vehicle parts imports had an additional 25% tariff imposed (on top of the 2.5% tariff) in 2018, lithium ion batteries and inverters were excluded from that tariff, but in mid-2019, The Trump administration imposed a 15% tariff on batteries. (I just learned about that battery tariff)
In January 2020, the Trump admin reduced the tariff on batteries to 7.5%. Tesla clearly feels that’s low enough to warrant replacing all of their US made model 3 SR+ cars with made in China LFP cells. I imagine this will have a major impact on the model 3’s American-made ranking… #1 for cars, #3 for all vehicles… (as of October 2021)

I don’t know about you all, but I’m SO happy US taxpayers could help Tesla realize this achievement… in China.
