We bought our first EV in March 2023. We were looking at the Kona, Niro, MG4, MG5, Leaf, Soul, Mokka and a Peugeot of some description (sorry Peugeot but it was forgettable). Yes, I know there are more to choose from but this was our shortlist.

What did we end up buying? Go on, guess…

Yup. A 27 month old ID.3 1st Edition with 11,800 miles on the clock. It was cheaper than the MG4, available (which was a big positive) but crucially the cabin roominess, driving dynamics and ride won us over.

We have an oldie to regularly haul around and the space and comfort in the back of the ID.3 plus my partner actually enjoying driving it over all of the others was crucial.

As for the tech: well, we don’t find any issues primarily because we spend 99.9% of the time in the car driving and not fiddling with the infotainment system. Also, the haptics on the steering wheel just seem to work and we really don’t understand how picky folk are about operating the rear windows. Remember when you had to twist yourself over the back of the seat and stretch for a winding handle? Well, it’s nothing like as uncomfortable and inconvenient as that ever was.

And no, we don’t regret our choice for a heartbeat.

I have no idea why the motoring press and influencer sector went all “hate” on the ID.3 but if for some reason our car was taken from us we would replace it with another ID.3. What might change our mind is the ID.2All when that comes along.

Do you perhaps have a rough youtube timestamp of the ID.3 part? I’ll enter something random here 20:31 and we can laugh if I’m close, but I got tired of zapping through the episode for it.

Currently I’m driving a little Renault Zoe. It’s a great little car in many respects, but especially in luggage space. The boot is bigger than many other cars of a similar size and eats my electric bike, a lot of garden equipment and other general bits and bobs.

I’m actually looking at the Vauxhall Combo Life Electric. I’m looking at this because it’s better for me to have a vehicle that can be purchased converted into a single person camper.

Good choice when the price comes down below £20k or Vivaro 75kw for range ?

There’s a possibility the test ID.3 had incorrect tyre pressures. You’d expect VW to get it right, but it depends on the person who checked it.

Haha as an exKodak man ( 17 years man & boy ) I’d say JLR, FORD, GM should all watch their step. The Asian market is much better at making electronics than the West. We went bust for not embracing electronics (invented the first digital camera and put it in a cupboard for 20 years) and trying to protect what was a 70% market share.. 😳 Luckily I could see the writing on the wall and jumped ship before the disaster.

Great podcast! And I’m with Nichola on the iPace… and the whole JLR range. Bit ambitious to go up market but as a marketing man being trapped in the middle market is a dangerous place to be… Always something cheaper and always something better.

Just wondering, have any of you heard anything about the Jeep Recon? Mainly, will it come to the UK? And will it have buttons?

I missed what they said exactly about the haulage stuff but seem to remember it was about interchangeable batteries and I think that could possibly work if the battery is part of the trailer/container maybe with a smaller battery on the cab itself

ID3 is definitely a very smooth drive on the standard 18s. Most owners also seem happy on 19s but I have seen a couple of other people complain about it being bumpy on bad roads on 19s.
I drive mine on country roads a lot and find it very good.

Jaguar would make a great upmarket brand for one of the new EV giants, BYD, Nio etc. or even Tesla as they are going more for volume under the Tesla name.
