FIRST DRIVE: Alfa Romeo Junior – the sportiest electric hot hatch yet? | Electrifying

Check out the review:

The Junior (known as the Romeo Milano up until a few days ago) is a small SUV that's roughly the very same size as the , which is no coincidence as both and Alfa belong to the automobile production giant, Stellantis, which combined Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen, . Vauxhall and more– all into one company a few years back. That's why the Junior also shares many parts with the Avenger and the Fiat 600e, including its 'e-CMP2' platform and 54kWh battery. This is also the first electrical vehicle to come from the historic Italian brand.

That battery, mated to a 154bhp electric motor that drives the front wheels, manages a variety of around 250 miles, and they'll be a sportier one coming, too. The Alfa Junior Veloce will get 236bhp, as it will use the exact same motor as the recently-confirmed Abarth 600e. It'll also get larger track, a mechanical locking differential, so it should be appropriately enjoyable to drive.

The 54kWh lithium-ion battery is familiar from the , Peugeot e-208, Vauxhall Corsa-e and more, and here it's expected to handle a variety of around 250-miles, although we'll need to wait on the settled figure. The higher-powered, beefed-up Alfa Junior Veloce design gets 236bhp– rather than the 154bhp of the basic vehicle– plus a number of tweaks to make it seem like a proper lover's cars and truck, so we 'd expect range on that to be a fair bit lower. Quick charging is up to 100kW, which will get a 10-80% charge in around 30 minutes, or a 100-mile top-up in about 20 minutes. A 7kW home battery charger will deliver a full charge from nearly empty in eight hours.

Sign up with Nicki as she drives the new Alfa Romeo Junior for the very first time. Has Alfa built a winner? Will it be as excellent to drive as more expensive options? Let us understand in the comments below.

    Nice looking car.
    First thing I want to hear on any electric car review is range and price. It’s always left very late on.
    You struggle to find the battery size on Alpha’s site, but it’s a lowly 54 kWh. Will struggle to get 200 miles, no good at all.

      Which is how they get the weight below 1600 kg – all that, and 300+km range? Brilliant!

    Hi Nikki, how can you compare this to the ioniq5N, the 5 N has nearly 300 more horse power and is a totally different beast. 🤔❤️

      Nearest competitor would be the dual motor genesis GV60 I would think. That has 310bhp, similar size, and is about 8 grand more.

      @@NoggintheNog37 The GV60 is one category larger than this car (417 cm vs. 451 cm in length). And a completely different category if we’re talking about charging and comfort. The closest competition for this vehicle is the Alpine A290.

      At 2300kg The IONIQ5N also weighs 700kg more, which is where the comparison is valid due to the handling compromise. I’m sure Alfa could make a 650bhp electric car with a sub 1800kg kerb weight.

    You were grinning the whole time. That was the whole review for me. Reminded me of my first trip in an Alfetta GT.

      @grahamreddel5682

      As a PS, my Alfetta GT was far from perfect but it had the most wonderful steering and seating position plus extremely long legs for touring plus a gearbox over the rear axel. So different from cars available in the early eighties. My current Alfa Spider has been with me for 30 years. The motor is indestructible, all original, just routine maintenance.

    Great video Nicki, looked lots of fun. A track focussed crossover makes no sense, who is going to take their family crossover on a track? I feel sorry for Alfa, stuck with the Stellantis FWD platform when the switch to EVs makes RWD easy. I’m sure it drives nicely, but it’d be even more fun if the back wheels did the driving and the front ones just the steering

    1. @jamesroseby3823 Avatar
      @jamesroseby3823

      No, it’s NOT track focused. This drive event shows how the Alfa handles on a twisty road when driven enthusiastically. The Junior has not yet been homologated so can’t yet be driven on public roads. Of course if one never drives with enthusiasm then you’d never consider an Alfa anyway.

    I wonder what all the nay-sayers drive? This is not a 2.5t oversized EV. It’s small, relatively light and can handle like any Alfa should. It’s more than enough to do what it needs to do in town yet be fun on a twisty road. It’ll be a nice complement to my Giulietta and 4C. It’s on the shopping list.

    It looks like Alfa have nailed it on price, performance, weight, and above all handling. I would just like to see its bigger brother when it comes out before committing. Thanks for the first proper review of this that I have seen.

    A very stylish looking car and about time Alfa had some prolonged success to boost the brand. Recently I spend 3 weeks driving a Dodge Hornet plug in Hybrid (an Alfa) in the US which is built alongside the Alfa Tonale in Italy. It was very impressive

    An electric performance car with less than 1600kg kerb weight. Only Alfa could, and they did. It looks really good, and should be a wake-up call for German brands. Like, why must their electric cars weigh over 2 tonnes? This shows that they need not.

    I like aspects of it, but I’m so SUVd out. If it was a sedan, wagon, or proper little hatch I’d be _way_ more enthused. I must say though, those seats, wheel design, and “grille” look fantastic
