I’d love for this to move quickly but I’m not hopeful – DOE and DOT will need to hire new staff, train them up, write up the grant programs, incorporate public feedback, educate the states and other agencies involved, initiate the program, accept and review applications…and then they can start approvals and cutting checks. It’s likely going to be 2+ years before this money goes out.
This seems like a “dog bites man” story. When have car makers ever not been begging the government to pay for charging networks?
I’m not against a government subsidy, if it’s done fairly (which I have doubts about, but we’ll see). I mean, of course we want to accelerate the transition to electric cars. What irks me is watching car makers as they have lobbied and begged and wheedled, year after year, administration after administration, for tax-paid charging infrastructure while never spending one single dollar of their own money on it.
The only real exceptions are Tesla and VW, and we all know VW were practically held at gunpoint.
No surprise to see, or should I say, not to see certain automakers endorsing that letter.
