πŸ”Œ Can I run an electric car without having off-street parking?

Having someplace to park and plug in the house or work makes running an electric much easier. However can you still drive one if you don't have a driveway?

The next in our series of myth busting pieces with @_ takes a look at the choices offered for drivers without off-street parking, describes how they work and the length of time they take to your electric .

isn’t amazing that all this electricity needed for all the EVs we all will be “forced” to drive, just by Magic comes out of a socket.

You need to find out about national grid base loading, and since EV charging is mostly done at night at base load there will not require much more peak loading for EV cars. The second thing you need to research for yourself is that the amount of electricity used by oil refining in the UK is enough to charge 30% of all EV if every car is an ev.
The final thing you might make some effort at looking up is that lamp posts were supplied with high current capacity cabling for the original sodium discharge lights. These are now replaced with LED lighting using a fraction of the power leaving plenty of capacity for car charging.

@@tomooo2637 guess that is why UK is importing so much electricity since they cant produce enough.

@@JoriDiculous nope, we export via the interconnects, we still balance with EU, it depends on requirements. Wind and solar is much cheaper than gas now and we have the largest wind farms in the world, so EU balances on as much wind ,solar and nuclear. Gas is now imported from middle east, and the canal is under attack making gas even more expensive as ships get attacked.
I just looked up the current UK grid as of 21:20 , on 28th of Dec and import is 5.4 GW as we are using 1.5GW of gas, as import is cheaper than gas. Wind is at 20.2GW.
Our nuclear is only 5.2GW at the moment as it was run flat out last year when Russia crapped on the gas market, much of nuclear is off line for very late maintenance.
The quicker we get away from authoritarian nutters for gas the better, and much cheaper.
We have about 30GW of gas generation if necessary, but as is last generation option cos it is very expensive.

@@tomooo2637 i happens to live in a country that have been exporting Gas for decades to UK, and UK Is dependent on it. And with the new cables ( Search up North Sea Link that supply UK with 1/3 of all the gas in UK. Or to put it an Abassador Jan Thompsons own word; ” Both our countries must reach their climate targets, but we will need Norwegian gas for many years to come, says Thompson, and emphasizes that many other European countries are also completely dependent on gas from Norway.”)
And now we also export Electricity to UK. In short; UK is dependent on Import.

I run my EV without home charging – no issue

How much are you paying per kWh? I don’t see how it’s economically viable to rely on public charging.

@@srbs73 I get a flat rate of 47p with my Volvo Card at most Public Chargers and can charge for free at work when I go in the office. My total monthly motoring costs are Β£50 a month less with a new leased Volvo EV than when I owned, insured and ran my previous 8 year old diesel Jaguar

Looked at lamppost chargers in Winchester. 1. Residents only parking zone, 2. Ice vehicle parked in front of charger. Pointless

What ppl don’t understand (eh for Germany..there are 110000 chargers(about 50k fast chargers) and 2 million electric cars.. compare that to 14000 petrol stations with 6 -10 pumps each .. but that’s to suit 45million cars ..and they moan there arent enough chargers .🀷

Caution there is a QR code scam on charging points in the UK so be careful before hand

Yes, you can but need more availability of public chargers like in video (preferably with free parking) to make it worthwhile
